The VIDCUBE is a tool to create a 3D slitscan-style effect from video footage. Provided with a video file or frame sequence, the application constructs a cube from the frames, arranging them along the z-axis according to time.
Viewed from the front, this cube can be played back, with the frames being rearranged so the one to be viewed is at the front of the stack. While this is happening, the cube can be ‘sliced’ into, with an invisible plane manipulated to make cuts through the footage. The cube can also be rotated and rescaled. This re-arranges the frames seen and allows sections from different times to be viewed at once, creating unusual echoes, or trails within frames.
The software was created for director Simon Owens, a custom tool for the production the music video for Happy Meals’ May You Be The Mother.
