Bear is a musical instrument in 2 parts. Firstly a bottom heavy, self righting children’s toy with sound producing metal rods inside with 2 contact microphones and a stereo cable attached. Secondly, a custom Pure Data patch which creates looped phrases from the audio it hears, based on volume. Together they create a perpetual soundscape of bell like sounds and knocks.
By changing the controls in the patch and ‘playing’ the bear in different ways, it is possible to shape the kind of audio that will be produced between long looping phrases and staccato repetitions of short sounds.
The bear is bottom heavy & difficult to knock over, it rocks back and forth causing a pendulum to hit one or more metal rods, creating a bell like sound. This is picked up by contact microphones that have been added.
The Pure Data patch picks up the audio from the bear and begins recording a phrase when it hits a certain threshold. It then stops when it dips below a lower volume threshold.
