Something or Other is a series of presentations, conversations, events held at the London College of Communication that sets out to enquire into the particularities of contemporary culture. It takes the form of staged lectures and framed debates intending to provoke dialogue, debate and curiosity.
The website serves as a platform to announce themes and events, as well as a repository of talks and links to further material. Taking the duality of the series’ title, as well as the first theme – Open – as a starting point the site continues the conversation. The front of the site (Something) holds the content from the talks and events, while the back of the site (Other) places this content in constant dialogue. The recorded audio of each event is passed through speech recognition, leading to a transcript of each speaker. In the Other side these transcripts are pulled together, creating an aggregate of the words of two speakers at a time – the cross pollination between distinct talks and, even, different themes creates an alternative way to browse the content of the site and, occasionally, throws up some almost profound new thoughts.
The site is built on WordPress, and uses Hay Kranen’s Markov generator to merge texts. It uses GT Cinetype from Grilli Type.
